Elena Karavodin’s solo exhibit at the Encinitas Community Center in 2021 became a notable example of censored art. The City of Encinitas removed eleven artworks deemed indecent before the show opened, ultimately choosing to censor art and silence Artistic Freedom. These censored artworks and paintings, along with their alleged “violations,” are displayed below.
The National Coalition Against Censorship intervened, alerting Encinitas to potential First Amendment breaches. The NCAC advocated for guidelines that protect artistic freedom in public spaces and asked the City to recognize the freedom of Artists to express diverse views. In turn, affirming the rights of people in the community to see a wide range of artwork. Read their letter to the city here.
In response to this censored art controversy, ArtHatch in Escondido, CA hosted a free exhibition of all the censored art from June to August 2021. View the Press Release here.
